Wahlström provides Advice

Margareta Wahlström provides career-based advice, including keeping one's goals clear and enjoying diverse experiences.

Ky Luu:  What advice would you offer young- to mid-level professionals in our career, in our field, that look up to you, and perhaps want to follow in your footsteps?

Margareta Wahlström:  One is, I think you mentioned education here in the beginning, in a way, it doesn’t matter what education you have, because most types of skills and professionals have a place and are useful in some perspective and part of the spectrum of our work.  What is important is motivation to work in a hugely diverse environment, which is very fast moving, it is very difficult to slow down, but which also requires reflection and constant conversations.  And to always keep a very clear mind about what the ultimate goal is, and why we are doing this.  Because in this type of work, the hustle and bustle, with the many actors, you can easily get torn and drawn back and forth.  So your own motivation, your own reflection on why you are doing this and not something else and the ultimate goal of the collective effort to go into this are really key to understand when you enter.  That should not prevent people from doing test runs.  I am a great believer in trying out what you can achieve, move to something else.  We don’t finish an experience…ever. I myself have moved between different jobs quite a lot, and every new assignment has given me new experiences that I can apply to my next stage.  So I think that should encourage it, but at least people should not worry about it, which sometimes younger people do, because they know the job market can sometimes be a bit tough.  But if you know what you are going towards, and how you acquire experience.  A diverse experience actually helps you to do a job in a very interesting, challenging, and fun type of work, but you also have to always keep your antennae alive.

Ky Luu:  Margareta, thank you for coming on to the Leadership Corner, and thank you for inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Margareta Wahlström:  Thank you very much.
